Beekeeping brings therapy to a community

Bees play an important role in the ecosystem as they pollinate plants and produce honey however studies have shown recently that bees also play a therapeutic role for people.

Caring For Life a Christian charity based on a farm in Leeds, has created a new conservation project to provide therapy for vulnerable people of all ages.

The charity’s focus is to give life long care to people who are vulnerable and deeply damaged. The farm caters for 60 people in two residential homes and engages with 250 in the wider community. In the near future the charity is looking to accommodate an additional 50 people in a small village complex.

Beekeeping extends beyond the rewards of honey and pollination. The responsibility of beekeeping provides people with a sense of purpose within society.

Research shows that beekeeping is therapeutic because it brings people together and the responsibility gives them a sense of self worth and community pride.

As a beekeeping clothing manufacturer, Sherriff were so pleased to be involved in the project and provide useful correspondence and information to the charity about beekeeping and honeybees. As we move forward and Care For Life continues to grow we hope we can build our relationship and support the charity in its mission.
