Sustainability

Bees, and nature, are under threat like never before. At BJ Sherriff, we do everything we can to minimise our effect on nature, maximise the life of our clothing, and conduct our business sustainably.

The original long-life protection

Everything we make is built to last, with extra strong stitching, durable zips and hard-wearing fabrics. Our garments are carefully designed to be worn, washed, repaired, and loved for decades. And it’s not unheard of to hear about a Sherriff suit from the 1980s that is still going strong!

Extending the life of your apparel

With proper care, your Sherriff suit, jacket or hood should last you for years and years. But we know accidents happen and sometimes suits get so much use they can start to wear out. Owners of BJ Sherriff apparel can use our Repair and Refurbish service, where our skilled machinists can get it back to safe and secure condition for a fraction of the cost of a new suit or hood. So you can stay safe, extend the life of your apparel, and keep things out of landfill for longer.

Made in England

Our skilled sewing machinists make, and repair, every single garment right here in Cornwall in England. Where possible, we buy components in Cornwall or as locally as possible, and solely in the UK.

Responsible packaging

We use a combination of recyclable packaging:

  • Branded cardboard boxes, swing tags and paper packaging sheets – please reuse if possible, or recycle in household recycling.
  • 100% recyclable bags made with 30% recycled material – reuse if possible, or recycle with bags at supermarkets.
  • Hydropol garment bags – dissolve in your sink in hot water.

More on Hydropol
Our Hydropol bags are made from a marine-safe polymer. It breaks down into carbon dioxide, water and mineralized natural biomass, leaving zero waste. To dispose of your Hydropol garment bag, pop it in your sink and fill with boiling water from the kettle. It will break down quickly and harmlessly in water temperatures above 70°C. If your bag ends up in landfill, it will biodegrade naturally and leave no trace.

Recycling our packaging in Europe
If you’re in Europe, please follow the Triman recycling guidelines. You will also find a QR code on our packaging that will take you to the guidelines.

Maximising the potential of every item

Sometimes we grow out of a garment or may have to give up beekeeping for one reason or another. Our apparel has excellent resale value on second-hand sites like eBay. And we are working on our buy-back / pre-loved scheme, so that another beekeeper can make good use of items you no longer wear. Our buy back scheme for children’s garments will come into play in 2024 and, if successful, we shall then launch the scheme for adult clothing.
